“Girls” have appeal… by Bill Perkins
On August 28th of this year, the results were announced in the 11th Annual Script-A-Palooza’s TV Pilot competition. Script-A-Palooza is a popular screenwriting competition in Hollywood, California. Each year, dozens of production companies and literary representatives sign on as participants to read and judge writers’ work from all over the country. Resulting in many writers being requested, projects being funded, and other success stories.
This year, 277 entries in the TV Pilot category competed. Among the Quarter Finalists (top 25) was the Pilot script for a half hour comedy television series entitled, “One of the Girls”, by two Wilmington (NC) based writers. Series Creator, Langley McArol, and writing partner, Richard Gehron have worked extremely hard for nearly three years to bring this story to life.
According to Mr. McArol, since the competition, they have gained interest from several potential investors from various states to produce the pilot episode, which they plan to pitch to major networks once filming is completed. At this time, they are contacting representatives of several “recognizable” actors to take part in this production, hoping to film in Wilmington after the New Year.
“We are so excited about the recent breakthroughs with this project. Three years is a long time to pound away at one project, but it’s a concept that we believe in with all our hearts”, says McArol, adding, “I’m just happy that industry professionals are starting to see it too.”

Wilmington filmmaker Langley McArol with the help of Richard Gehron placed as a quarter finalist in the 11th annual Scriptapalooza Semi-Annual Television Writing Competition in Hollywood.
The script for “One of the Girls” finished in the top 25 of 277 television pilots submitted.
Scriptapalooza started in 1998 as a national screenwriting competition for feature movies but opened the doors to television writing the following year. Submissions are judged by production companies and literary representatives.
“It’s a really good way to break in as a writer but it’s also a great way to get the series picked up,” McArol said.
He began working on the script about three years ago and has made several revisions since then. With the bad economy, he said, investors in ideas are hard to find. But this competition has already created opportunities for his script.
McArol says after placing in Scriptapalooza he’s been contacted by investors in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
The story is about a guy who has problems in his love life because all his friends, who happen to be girls, only want to be friends.
“This whole comedy is loosely based on my life,” he said.
Up next for the writer is contacting actors, filming the pilot and pitching it to major networks. Jessie Ward (“It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”) already is attached to star in the film.
